My father passed away last year and we are waiting to finalize the estate. Apparently all that left to receive Final Taxation Clearance Certificate before the remainder of the estate is dispersed. How long does it usually take to get the Final Taxation Clearance certificate from Revenue Canada?

It really depends on the complexity of the estate. For a simple estate, and as long as you provide everything that the CRA is going to need, six months to a year. If the estate is complex, or if there is any question that the provisions in the will cannot or will not be followed, then it can take a lot longer.

Clearance certificates are issued by auditors. As with any audit, the auditor can take their sweet time with processing the file.

If all the information was sent in and all returns were assessed, about 6 months.

If there is information or other documentation missing, add 2 months for it to be requested and 2 more months for it to be processed after it is sent in, plus however long it takes the executor to send it in. If there is still information missing, keep adding time.

If there were any returns that weren't assessed yet, or that haven't been filed but are required to be, there won't be a clearance certificate, but eventually a letter telling you there won't be one and why.

If the executor doesn't hear anything for 6 months, they or an authorized rep should call to follow up. Put in a service complaint if nothing is happening a couple of months after that follow up.

Under ideal circumstances you would be waiting atleast 4 to 6 months for a C.R.A. certificate.

It depends on the complexity of the Estate, but figure on at least six months. Sad to say, but delays of up to two years aren't uncommon.
