My employer sent me two T4 tax forms in the mail. They seem very similar just one of them claims different amounts in different sections then the other. I didnt make a whole lot this year because I was doing a program in college but was still employed the whole time with practicums. Why would my employer send 2 T4's and do I use both for taxes or just one? Should I just bring both in when I do taxes? Either way I am still under a very very low bracket of yearly income Im just wondering why I did recieve two T4's. I have asked a few people but no one understands it since it is from the same employer with the same codes and serial numbers on top of the form?? Thanks for any information!

If the amounts are different, Fred is wrong. Why don't you ask your employer?

Yes, you should take both to your tax preparer.

If there are different amounts on them, the second one is not just a copy for your records. Do you have your pay stub from the end of the year? If so, you would have an idea of how much the amounts SHOULD be. If the total income would be the combination of the two stubs, then they should probably be added together. If the total income is around the amount of ONE of the stubs, then your employer made a mistake. Does one of the T4's say "amended" anywhere on it? If so, that's the one you should use. Either way, you should talk to your employer to make sure. There is probably a reasonable explanation. I received two T4's from my employer this year too but that's because they incorporated part way through the year so I had one for the first part and one for the second part under the new business.

If the amounts are different on the two T4's, then either your employer made a mistake on one of them, or you need to add the amounts from the two T4's together and report the combined amounts. You need to talk to your employer about this.

Two T4's:

It's perfectly fine for your employer to give you two valid T4 slips. They might be doing it for record keeping purposes, or perhaps their accounting software screwed something up. It's just fine as long as the combined amounts accurately reflect your total income and deductions.

Talk to your employer. It's important to find out what they've told the CRA.

An employer is required to send you two copies of the T4. One is for your records, the other is to be sent in with your tax return.

If you're filing your tax return online, the second copy isn't necessary, but your employer is still required to send it to you. File it, or discard it, whichever you wish.
