I need a copy of my T4, but lost the one I had received from my previous employer. I am no longer employed at all. Do I go back and ask for a new copy from them? I am not sure; I need it soon

You go back and ask your previous employer for it. If you can't contact your previous employer or they won't send a copy... you can contact Canada Revenue Agency directly and they can provide a copy -- provided your company has inputted it with them -- which most likely they did if you received a copy. If you go to a tax preparation place and give them permission, they can go online with CRA and look it up for you.
If the employer didn't give you one or submit it to CRA... write a letter to them and keep a copy. Use your pay cheque information to find your deductions (or use a calculator if they don't list them), fill in those amounts, and include a letter to CRA stating your employer didn't file a T4, this is your best guess, and include the copy of your letter to them. You might wish to have a tax preparation place do this for you.
